The Video Technology Department at John B. Connally High School had the great honor of showcasing their videos, for a second time, at the Apple Store. The Apple store loves to see their products put to good use and when they saw what my video technology classes and I did, they wanted to showcase our projects to the public and Apple Corporate as well. They gave us this honor once before and gladly excepted us again this year.

I personally love Apple products. I constantly verbally "advertise" for them. I jokingly say that, they should pay me for all the times I talked about how epic apple products are! But, paid or not, I enjoy working with Apple products and will continue to use them. I wouldn't have any other way. Kudos to you Apple! Keep dishing out those awesome innovative technologies!

Enjoy!

Austin, Texas is one of, if not the best city to live in! It is full of environmentally friendly establishments, great tasting restaurants, and awesome clubs. It is greatly dedicated to the arts. Holding the annual SXSW festival and many others, bringing more people and interest to the city. Austin is known as the live music capital of the world and all Austin knights keep to this name; along with our motto: "Keep Austin Weird". If you haven't visited Austin, I would advise you to come and enjoy the pleasantries that my fellow Austin knights and I enjoy everyday!

I hope you all enjoyed my film "Paradox of the Intellect". While I was in Pre-Production for the sequel for my Paradox Trilogy, I was thinking to myself, 'Why don't I finish the entire Paradox of the Intellect film I planned!' So that is exactly what I'm going to do! I'm taking this chance to revise the script and make it better. Using footage from the original film, I will add the new scenes and shots from my revised materials. I plan to show more story behind the character of Alexander Ballantine and hint at the story line of Officer William Miller. More action and effects will be used to keep the audience interested. I have been learning Photoshop and After Effects so I plan to make this new extended edition more professional and way more epic.

If you noticed earlier in this blog I said something about my "Paradox Trilogy". Yes, it means what it says. More information coming about that later. Until then, look for the Extended Edition of "Paradox of the Intellect" to hit the web summer 2010

This is the JVC GY-HM700U . Is on my wish list for a distant christmas. One of the reasons I want a camera like this is because of the solid state recording technology. I still have a lot of time and research to do before I make a decision.

Personally I hate capturing footage from miniDV tapes. Imagine you have a 2 hour show to edit. That's 2 hours to record it plus another 2 hours to capture, not including the time you'll spend editing. Now what if you have that same situation, only 3 cameras were used for the shoot. That's 2 hours to record it plus 6 hours to capture if you're doing all that yourself. Not to mention the amount of time you'll go over all that footage and edit.

With SD cards (solid state) the footage gets transfered to your computer like files on a hard drive. Now that's 2 hours to record plus 45 minutes tops to transfer all those files. It's an amazingly helpful technology in the video industry.

As I continue to grow as a media professional, I must broaden my horizons of program use. I am skilled at Final Cut, Livetype, Garageband, etc. but, I feel as if I need more. To compete with the dangerous foes of the media world I need to be well-rounded. To start this process I have started playing around with programs like Motion, DVD Pro and After Effects. It is tough but, the feeling of achievement is so much better. Which brings to me this post. I have been working with Adobe Photoshop V.10.

I used my picture I had from the AdYouth photo shoot. Here is what I did. Tell me what you think! Also look for more work to come.

This week we broadcasted an event at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum. Texas Parks and Wild Life wanted to connect a number of schools around the state of Texas to watch The Life of a Buffalo Soldier and ask their own questions. A video conference chain was established with schools that had the equipment necessary in class. After the Buffalo Soldiers told their stories students personally asked their own questions and received live answers. This was just a small portion of the full educational potential that such technology delivers. It was an amazing learning experience and everyone involved did a great job in delivering a great learning experience to hundreds of students in Texas.

In this Video Michael helps me become familiar with the equipment before the shoot.

About three months ago, there were three students making short films to be entered in SXSW's Texas High School Short competition. Two of them were your very own AdYouth/Media Proteges, Christian Nelson, and myself, Peter Jiang.

Last week, I received an email regarded my short documentary film, The Game of Ninja. According to this particular email, The Game of Ninja has been selected to be screened at South-by-Southwest (SXSW) as part of the Texas High School Shorts competition! Although Christian's film, 'Paradox of the Intellect,' was unfortunately not selected for screening, this is exciting news for us since The Game of Ninja is 1 out of 19 short films by high schoolers across the state being screened at the huge festival. And I say 'us' because Christian composed an instrumental track that's featured in the short. In addition, I receive a complimentary film badge to attend and participate in film-related activities at SXSW.

The Game of Ninja is a short documentary film about a game we played at my school. Like the title states, the name of the game is "Ninja." The short covers how the students featured in the video came about Ninja, and how to play it.

If you're coming to SXSW and plan on seeing my film, you can see it with a lot of other great high school shorts (which I'm sure they are) at the Carver Museum at 5:00PM on Saturday, March 30th (http://my.sxsw.com/events/event/2201), and at the Alamo Drafthouse on Lamar at 11:30AM on Saturday, March 20th (http://my.sxsw.com/events/event/6521).

Here is the finished film that I submitted to the SXSW Youth High School Film Festival. Unfortunately, it did not get accepted but, anyways I am still proud of it. This marks the first film I have done that I have not acted in. Why because, I wanted to see how I have grown behind the camera. I am exceptionally happy with the camera work for this film. I hope you enjoy and look for the next Paradox film, coming soon.

Please comment and leave me some feedback and Ideas for the sequel!

Well, we're halfway through February and have completed several tours in Austin and Houston. This past week, we visited MediaTech Insititute in Houston and had a hands on video workshop with AMS Pictures in Austin, TX. Shown here are students working both in front of and behind the camera as they learn how to work with green screens. Green screens are used all of the time in video and film. Local weather reports usually feature a weather person in front of a green screen so that images and video can be placed behind them.
The movie Avatar features green screen work throughout allowing the film makers to composite special visual effects with live action shots.

So, did anyone notice how Pixar's animated movie, Up, has been nominated for best picture in this year's Oscars?
Yeah, it might not seem like much that it's been nominated for best picture, but it's kind of a big deal.
Did you know it's only the second animated movie to ever be nominated for best picture?
What's up with that?

Being the two proteges still in high school, Christian and I are still subject to the workings of a public school system. Whether or not that's a good thing is subjective but currently in our Technology Applications class, the class is working on a short film together, written by one of our classmates and selected to be filmed by the class. The script is called Sturk High and is about a girl who stays late at school, only to be hunted by a maniac killer.

Christian and I have been selected as producer and director respectively. We're currently conducting interviews for our classmates to see who could fill in each needed crew role. Soon afterwards, the screenwriter and I will sit down and make many changes to the script. While we're still in the pre-production phase of this film, I can't wait to show you the results (my favorite part of being a filmmaker!).

Anyway, that's the current update on us two, at least. Have a nice week!

Sun, 31 Jan 2010 13:45:02 -0800 The Podcast Novel http://adyouth.mediaxperiments.com/the-podcast-novel-0 http://adyouth.mediaxperiments.com/the-podcast-novel-0
Media_httpi173photobu_bsrha

One night a few months ago I discovered something interesting on the Zune marketplace under the podcast section. It's not something new in the strictest sense, but the idea was completely foreign to me, much like how one discovered the magic of instant messaging. I found a series called "How to Succeed in Evil," by Patrick E. McLean, a podcast novel. (You can check out this novel's website here: http://succeedinevil.com/ )

What is a podcast novel? That's what I wondered, but since all its chapters were FREE downloads, what's wrong with checking it out? As it turns out, a podcast novel is simply an audiobook with chapters released in a serialized format. In other words, it combines the concept of a podcast and an audiobook (consequently called a podiobook). Some authors/narrators use sound effects, others don't. I listened to "How to Succeed in Evil" while working much like how people usually listen to music on their mp3 player. When I finished the story three weeks later, I hungered for more.

The 2nd half of the episodes released also had a plea from the co-founder of podiobooks.com, Evo Terra, to buy J.C. Hutchins' "7th Son: Descent," which was originally a techno-thriller podiobook, but has been released IN PRINT due to its popularity as a podiobook. Being a sucker for "related goods," I proceeded to check this "novel" out. The very first line of this book: "The president of the United States is dead. He was murdered in the morning sunlight by a four-year-old boy..." How can that NOT hook you?

As it turns out, the concept of a podcast novel has been around since 2005, when Scott Sigler released "EarthCore" as the "first podcast-only novel," which had over 10,000 subscribers. Since then, Sigler was able to get many of his novels to be released in print (I myself ordered my copy of "Infected" and "Contagious"). If you haven't listened to a podiobook yet, go ahead and check them out. Since Scott Sigler released "EarthCore" in 2005, there have been many authors/podcasters that began releasing their own podcast novels. There are many available in different genres on podiobooks.com, the Zune marketplace, or the iTunes store, many of which are free to download and listen to.

If you're also into sci-fi stuff like myself, I suggest to listen to 7th Son: Descent by JC Hutchins and Infected by Scott Sigler. You can check them out at their sites, http://jchutchins.net and http://scottsigler.net.

This is a prime example of new media technology being used in today's world. Scott Sigler himself even uses social media to keep up with his fan base (I was even sent a few direct messages to my surprise over Twitter from him). Hopefully I've opened up your eyes to another form of media and I hope you'll participate as a listener in this movement.

I traveled there with people from my own high school and others as well. We meet at the Administration Building in Pflugerville at 4:30 in the morning so we could make the competition on time. We arrived at A&M Consolidated High School (btw GO LONGHORNS) to set up our home base and prepare for the competition. I and my Team entered the Video Production competition. Upon entering the judging room we were faced with technical problems. The computer screen didn't work the projector was messed up, etc. But even though we still showed our video. At the awards ceremony many people from my own Connally High BPA club won placements into the state competition. Then, finally, the awards came to Video Production. Against schools like Akins, A&M Con., Hendrickson, Pflugerville, etc. we placed and gained access to the state BPA competition! Against the many problems and obstacles we faced we still managed to place! I am proud of me and my team for achieving our goal. I hope we do good at state. Wish us luck!

I submitted this video into a youth SXSW film contest. I made this film in 3 days. Both Production and Post-Production. Never again will I make a film in 3 days. Talk about stress and headaches. A note of advice to all future filmmakers: The earlier the better! I really what to appreciate my cast and crew for helping with this hard production. One thing I regret and dislike with a passion is the dreaded film contests Time Limits! The original script I made was a very well put together script. It explained the story better and was much more intense. But to fit the 5 minute deadline of the SXSW contest I had to take pen to paper and cut things that "wasn't that important". The story needs work, the acting could be better, and the VFX perfected but, I think this short shows how I have grown as a Cinematographer. My diversity of shots shocked me! Im proud of myself and above all my cast and crew for getting this project done. I hope you enjoy this small trailer and after SXSW I will upload the entire video so all can view it.

Look for the sequel of the same name to hit the screen sometime around May or June.

Tue, 26 Jan 2010 12:26:07 -0800 Community Media Struggles To Survive http://adyouth.mediaxperiments.com/community-media-struggles-to-survive http://adyouth.mediaxperiments.com/community-media-struggles-to-survive Today I read a blog about the future of the Austin public access channel, also known as channelAustin. The facility was recently upgraded to high performance broadcasting equipment. They have cameras, editing stations, a couple of fully equipped broadcasting studios, and soon to have a audio recording studio. Now, the main thing about this facility is that it's the most affordable way for people of all ages and demographics to voice their opinion and broadcast their original content.

Photo

Unfortunatly it is struggling to remain in operation. From what I understand, AT&T brought to the Austin state capital an army of lobbyists to create a statewide franchising system. Basically it's major telephone companies trying to get into the video business and franchise the industry. The main problem is that this telecommunication deregulation allows these corporate tyrants to bypass their debt to the community. What I mean by debt is that channelAustin (for example) receives 85% of it's annual budget from a "cable access fund" derived from Time Warner Cable subscriber fees.

San Antonio lost their public access facility as soon as the new franchise agreements went into effect. The current local agreements expire on August 12th, 2011. So what then? Twenty states already have been stripped of their municipal control over video franchises.

However there is still hope. Representative Tammy Baldwin introduced a bill called the Community Access Preservation Act (HR 3745). If enacted the bill will remove unfair federal restrictions on money the city receives from local providers. Currently the bill is being supported and word is San Antonio plans to take action as well. This movement might just instigate other states around the nation to take action towards recovering an re-establishing their rights to freedom of speech.

If you'd like to find out more and/or make a difference please visit channelAustin's website. Help us protect our community media. It can be as simple as spreading the word.
